Siloam Mission Service

The Winnipeg Sai Centre has been carrying out this service activity for several years, both initiated and sustained by two devotees at the Sai Centre.. The service is held once a month on every Saturday. The task is to cook and serve a warm meal at the Siloam mission. In general, the cooking is carried out in the morning over a three hour period. Typically, the devotees prepare macaroni and cheese, mixed vegetables, and beans. The items are stored in an oven until they are served at noon. Siloam provides additional items such as bread or buns, salad and dessert to the menu. This makes for a full warm and sumptuous meal for the under-privileged who frequent the mission.
Around 12:15 pm a second group of volunteers from the Sai Centre, usually eight in number, start setting up the serving trays and utensils. Some of the devotees volunteer for the full day, from preparing the food, to serving and cleaning the kitchen and dining hall. After the food prayer is offered, the plates are prepared. As the shutter opens and the guest begin to arrive, the plates are ready to be handed over in exchange for a token that they have been issued earlier. The tokens are counted later and the number usually varies between 250 to upto 400 on a typical day. The plates are filled at each station and passed on to the next like an assembly line until it reaches the end where the hand over takes place. The line is very orderly and we try to serve with a smile and greet the people and also acknowledge their thanks with humility. This service activity is one of the most fulfilling activities carried out by the Winnipeg Sai Centre.sass |
