Workshop highlighting the importance of Bhajans
On Saturday, February 29, 2020, at 9:00 am, several devotees of Region 2 attended the bhajan workshop held at the Scarborough Sathya Sai Centre. It was a 2.5 hour session filled with dynamic and insightful conversations about Swami’s teachings on bhajans. Before they entered into the bhajan hall, the attendees were asked to fill out 3 questions: 1) what is their favourite bhajan, 2) what is their favourite bhajan that Swami has sung, and 3) what is the most important ingredient in a bhajan session for it be beneficial. To invoke Swami’s presence and blessings, the workshop began with opening prayers followed by a few melodious bhajans led by the volunteers. The Region 2 Spiritual Coordinator, Brother Aruno Uthayan welcomed all the devotees to the workshop and introduced the topics.
The first topic focused on the theme of purity and unity through bhajan singing. The presenter, sister Seema, was very engaging and brought forth the physical and emotional benefits of taking part in group singing. Interesting comparisons were made between Western medical research and Swami’s teachings/messages. These comparisons helped the devotees to make practical connections with bhajan singing. The presentation ended with a very touching group discussion where devotees shared their personal spiritual journey through attending bhajans and chanting mantras.
The second topic focused on case studies of exemplary devotees as mentioned by Swami. Brother Baranitharan spoke in detail about the lives of Bhadrachalam Ramadasa and Thiyagarajah Swamigal. The dedication, devotion, and pure love these two devotees had for God were highlighted through song. The devotees were able to truly understand how they could also connect with God through simple conversation. The stories and excerpts were inspiring for everyone.
The final presentation focused on tying all the themes together. Several of Swami’s quotes and remarks on bhajans were discussed and devotees were able to understand and appreciate how bhajans are essentially the bridge to Lord Sai. The workshop then ended with a few more bhajans, including Manasa Bhajore which was the bhajan that was the favourite among all the devotees.
Through this workshop all devotees were reminded of the importance of regularly attending bhajans and actively participating in them. It was an insightful few hours with engaging topics and presenters. All participants left the session feeling truly inspired, devoted and excited to grow further in their spiritual journey.
